
Grams had finished washing and drying the dishes, and was in the process of putting them away. Her granddaughter, Jennifer, was next door helping Mitch Leery with his gardening. Jen was home for lunch and supper, but Jack had not been seen since lunchtime. Grams sat down a the kitchen table. The summer heat was beginning to get to her again. She was growing less tolerant of the long, hot summer days and the humid, sticky nights as the years went by. Now that her husband was with God and she no longer had to look after him, her mind did not have something all-important to occupy it. With both Jen and Jack out of the house for the moment, she could only ask the Good Lord to lessen the uncomfortable feeling the unusually hot summer heat was having on her. There was a knock at the door. Grams was not expecting anyone to stop by tonight at this late hour. She went to open the door, wondering who it was. When she opened the door, there stood a smiling, familiar face. And yet, it was the face of the Devil in the flesh. 
With a familiar voice to match the face, the girl standing at the door asked, "Excuse me, does Jennifer Lindley still live here?" "ABBY!! Sweet Lord in Heaven..." Grams managed to blurt out in utter disbelief before she fainted in the doorway. --END OF CHAPTER TEN-- |
